With the introduction, being already so queer and perverse, be biased as well and use your attention to say that the fifth anniversary of this festival is an achievement which empowers the independent cultural scene not only in Zagreb, but in the whole of Croatia. After (only) five years it can be proudly said that police cordons in front of theatres and cinemas where the festival is taking place have thinned out. Different interpreters of Biblical truths have given up on giving us their non-benevolent advice. Lastly, Queer Zagreb has been recognised as an interesting crossing point of aesthetics, art and socially relevant contents.
We opened topics which personally interested us like: «postsocialist queer identity», «heteronormativity of childhoods» or «transgression of private and public», we have rejected defence with the campaign «...homophobes are human, too» and have been screening over forty feature movies per year in a central cinema in Zagreb. Artists from Croatia and further thirty or so countries have allowed the festival to introduce the term queer to the local language, to redefine it and make it more contemporary. In many international cooperations with festivals and institutions from Tokyo, New York, Sao Paulo, London and Berlin programmes were created which used Croatian and regional queer experiences and impulses.
The celebratory progamme still has an unstoppable desire for intimate experience of queer through art, theory and activism with a special focus on regional geography. Performances include Slovenian National Theatre and a camp explosion by Ivica Buljan. Pravdan Devlahović finds out about other conditions, and Dragana Alfirević is pregnant and in that other condition. Young choreographer Matija Ferlin stands alone – in front of himself – and enjoys himself, and the amazing Ivo Dimchev talks about exploiting his own body (and voice) – even for art. The interpret of the life and works of H. C. Zabludovsky, Željko Zorica, offers us a treat – memorial plaque to Nazor and Kovačić in a posthumous outing. The festival will not leave Milko Valent's tongue at rest, but we will all enjoy its wiggling at the evening of poetry and wine. Nenad Polimac will show us gay motives in ex-Yugoslavian cinematography. And the ex-Yu is the center theme of our drag-night which will surely flake some mascara. Our lesbian night, with significantly less mascara for sure, will be a more rocking experience with Bura Bend and Le Zbor.
Queer Zagreb proudly announces its programme, its fifth birthday, thanks everyone for support and invites You to enjoy with us,
